Celebrating Learner Success with Access Skills

We love to celebrate when our learners achieve their career goals within the health and social care sector– read our latest success stories!

Caroline Addams

Caroline Addams, a learner who recently completed her Level 5 diploma told us about her new role as Head of Service. She said:

“I come from a pharmaceutical background and moved into front line care and support in my mid-twenties after a cancer diagnosis made me re-evaluate what was important and what I wanted to do with my life. I decided that I want to make a difference, be a change maker and advocate for vulnerable people. I worked as a care assistant and found a level of job satisfaction I’d never experienced before, you could see and feel the impact you had on people’s days and I was hooked! I worked my way through care assistant to senior support staff and then to team leader positions, experiencing dementia care, elderly care, LD and autism support, palliative care and gaining a deeply rooted passion for person-centred, holistic practices. When the opportunity came up to study for a Level 5 I jumped at the chance.

Trying to manage studying, a full-time management role and life during a pandemic was a challenge! 2020/2021 has been one of the most difficult periods of my life to date and dropped the ball several times. The Access Skills team provided me with support and genuine compassion, they made sure I had access to invaluable resources, offered various methods of unit completion and were always ready to answer questions. The professional discussions I had with Nici Belton were an absolute joy! The course has reignited my passion and I’m determined to keep that fire in my belly, using it to empower others. Once I completed the Level 5 I began to look for opportunities to progress my career, very quickly I stumbled upon an incredible opportunity within an organisation I’d admired. I will now be working as a Head of Service for them, using my passion and skills to support families of people with learning disabilities. I can’t wait for this next challenge, I am more than ready!

Celia Moulton is an inspiration! She is always available to talk with you, share her vast experience and knowledge. The level of support she provides is outstanding and I think it’s safe to say she has a huge impact on the people she meets. This kind of work isn’t for everyone, but when you find people who are equally as passionate as you, it’s another driver to work hard and keep trying to change the world for the better. Thank you so much to the team, you’ve been phenomenal!”

Oliver Gaunt

Oliver Gaunt, who is set to finish his Level 5 Adult Apprenticeship Standard with us in 2022. He has recently gained a registered manager’s position. He said:

“I started working in Health and Social Care in 2012 as a support worker. I worked my way up through the ranks with hard work and determination, and made sure to not let my lack of confidence get in the way. As I worked my way up, I overcame barriers and practiced interviewing new team members, and have found this to be a good way to increase my confidence.

Since joining the level 5 apprenticeship with Access Skills, I have been practising Professional discussions even further, and have found that my confidence has grown with each discussion. In an assessment recently, I felt that my confidence was able to shine as I mentored another member of my team and took the lead on a supervision. I feel like I have the skill down to a fine art now! With this new determination and my hard work, I have been able to gain a registered manager post.”

It is so fulfilling to be able to celebrate the achievements of our learners and help them to reach their full potential. If you are interested in finding out more about how you can strengthen your skills and knowledge, call one of our skills advisors today on 0121 510 2169 (option 1).
